Literature Review Ideas of Social Justice and Equity in...
Introduction Social change and social function has actually been concentrated largely on equity problems, although their working meanings, both implicit and specific, mirror a spectrum of meanings varying from easy activism around race, gender, and poverty, to more nuanced understandings of the effect of modern technology advancements, range, globalization, along with the eco-friendly environment. Literature review The ideas of social justice as well as equity have actually been considerable in conversations of social change in psychology, in education, as well as in social along with cultural studies (see likewise Curry-Stevens, 2007; Drury and Reicher, 2009; Moely, Furco, and Reed, 2008; Peterson, 2009). The writing alogn with advocacy of Ivan Illich, Paulo Freire, civil rights leaders, and feminists throughout the later half of the 20th century affected these understandings and assisted form the specific focus of social change in current years. Farley, filling in 1990, provided an understanding of social change as changes in habits patterns, social relationships, establishments, and social framework in time (Hoff Hickling-Hudson, 2011, p. 189). Nevertheless, Hoff and Hickling-Hudson discovered this insufficient from an educational perspective since of its value-neutral position. They liked a meaning that would offer social change a undertone of social development or social advancement useful to society (p. 189). In order to attract larger amount of capital in the different regions of the world it is important for the companies to present the information in the financial statements, which is understandable by a diverse group of people. We will write a custom essay sample on Disclosure issues- voluntary versus mandatory or any similar topic only for you Order Now Most of the world organisations are trying to find out ways towards the general standards. The formation of IASC in 1973, was the result of such efforts by different countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, UK and US. This international body has issued more than 30 International Accounting Standards and has given a general presentation of the framework of the preparation and information availability of information in the financial statements. Although the organisation has adopted English as its formal language but the standards are translated into many other languages used in the world to make them understandable by as many people as possible. The main hindrance in the way of the use of common standards between the nations is that they are not legally imposed. The use of International Accounting Standards is a voluntary act of the countries. (Taylor Pincus, 2002; p. 39) 2. Definition of Risk: Smith (1999) defines risk as a decision expressed by a range or possible outcomes with attached probabilities. When there is a range of possible outcomes but no assumed probabilities, there is only uncertainty (ibid. ). Hertz Thomas (1984) have suggested that ââ¬Å". Risk means uncertainty and the results of uncertaintyâ⬠¦ risk refers to a lack of predictability about problem structure, outcomes or consequences in a decision or planning situation. â⬠Risk is defined, as a bad notion is the most important stimulants for life. Uncertainty, far from being a symptom of imperfection, is in fact a natural property of economics, indeed, probably of all life systems . . .. Uncertainty is the name of the game in the service economy. (Giarini, 2000) According to (Feynman, 1998) it is in the admission of ignorance and the admission of uncertainty that there is hope for the continuous motion of human beings in some direction that doesnââ¬â¢t get confined, permanently blocked, as it has so many times before in various periods in the history of man. â⬠Adams (1995) defines risk as the ââ¬Å"balancing actâ⬠in which the actors ââ¬Å"balance the expected rewards of their actions against the perceived costs of failureâ⬠in a world in which both it and our perceptions of it are constantly being transformed by our effect on the world and its effect on us. In a ISO/TMB Risk Management Terminology Paper (1999) risk is defined as combination of the probability of an event and its negative or positive consequences,â⬠The royal Society (1983) defined risk as ââ¬Å"a particular adverse event occurs during a stated period of time, or results from a particular challenge. â⬠Importance of Risk Disclosure: Murphy (1999) sees Financial reporting and financial statements in particular can be thought of as a lens through which one could view a business. Financial reporting provides a broader view of the business than that provided by financial statements only. In other words, financial reporting encompassed financial statements, but it is not limited to financial statements. It is assumed that by providing information that meets the needs of investors and creditors, the company also meet the information needs of other external parties, it would be able to provide superior information if it treated each potential group of external users separately and prepared different information for each group. This approach is impractical, however, and the company instead out for preparing what is referred to as general-purpose information that we believe is useful to multiple user groups. With the change in the economic environment the list of factors of production has included intangible assets such as information and knowledge. The intangible assets are replacing the old sets of assets. ââ¬Å"In order to keep on delivering profits the business must keep on investing in different projects in order to improve their organizational capabilities. These investments improve the capabilities of the business to respond to the customer demands, the external contacts of business reduces the risks attached to the products, internal integration improve the productivity of organization continuous experimenting not only improve the value creation but also enhance the image of the organization in business. These investments are very important for the businesses to survive it is necessary to measure the cost, inventory, space and quality savings measured by traditional capital budgeting systems. Most of the traditional accounting techniques measure the future flow of income by undertaking an investment which is not easy to calculate since the stream of income is expected to increase in future and the managers cannot decide to assign the right value to the future benefit. Rather than that it is easier to the calculate investment. This is due to the difficulty the future organisation face in calculating the future benefits; most organisations normally do not undertake new investments. (Enterweb, 2005) The use of intangible assets has created difficulties on the other hand also. People believe in what they see. The process of interaction of ideas and assets has been revolutionised. Developing trust and understanding with stakeholders is very important in order to turn knowledge in value. Today, the companies are required to report the performances not only on financial basis but also should under cover the issues such as vision, strategy, risks, value drivers, KPIs etc. The founders of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), Lev Borodovsky and Marc Lore, wrote in Risk Professional, ââ¬Å"no matter what types of methods are used, the key to risk management is delivering risk information, in a timely and succinct fashion, while ensuring that key decision makers have the time, the tools, and the incentive to act upon it. â⬠(Lev Lore, 1997) Externally reported financial information is largely historical in nature. It looks back in time and reports the results of events and transaction that already have occurred. You read "Disclosure issues- voluntary versus mandatory" in category "Papers" While historical information is very useful in assessing the future, the information itself is more about the past than it is about the future. A comparison of the historical trends with the future trends can be found helpful in better understanding of the information by the shareholders and other related people. (Financial Economists Roundtable, 1996) The improvement in public scrutiny and controlled market discipline is largely dependent upon the meaningful and accurate disclosure of information. This not only helps the shareholders but also helps the organisation to conduct business in a safe and efficient manner by achieving their targets through improving their risk management processes. The researchers find many gaps in the appropriate disclosure of risk by the organisations. Many surveys have been conducted, a wide variety of studies and interviews from the information users and shareholders have pointed out towards gaps in the currently disclosed information. The demand of provision of accurate and timely information is increasing. Business reporting effect people from every work of life an effective allocation of resources strengthens an economy by promoting productivity, innovations and an efficient and liquid market. Adequate information plays an important role in reporting the risks and opportunities of investing in business venture. To make effective decisions people need accurate information. The completeness and timeliness of information enhances the probability of taking the most appropriate decisions by the investors. Perhaps the foremost social and ethical responsibility levied upon private and public organisation in recent decades is the adoption of fair and just accounting practices. This responsibility is being increasingly codified in laws and various accounting standards. Its influence is becoming increasingly pervasive through a constant series of new and improved standards as well as steady enlargement in the size and scope of administering agencies. The voluntary disclosure of information by the companies will lead to the competitive advantage for the company in the market and will provide help to gain enormous amounts of capital all over the world. US Regulations for Risk disclosure: The US GAAP was founded in 1930 after one year of the historical depression in the US stock market in 1929. Till 1934 the companies kept on disclosing the information voluntarily. SEC was established in 1934 with the authority to establish the accounting standards but also to make sure that these standards are used in the preparation of the disclosures. Since the issue was very complex the private sector also started assisting the SEC in 1938 in order to settle the accounting standards. The most important and unique characteristic of the US GAAP is that its strength is tested in the market in which retail investors with banks and entrepreneurs invest. Now FASB is responsible to set US accounting standards. The ultimate responsibility of protecting the interest of the financial information users lies on SEC and it is fulfilling its functions since decades by constantly forming and developing set of accounting standards according to changing needs. A history of 70 years of interpretation and implementation of US GAAP in different industries has make it one of the most reliable and applicable set of standards. This application of 70 years has helped the accounting practitioners and professionals in filling the gaps and flaws in these standards which has not make them perfect but improved their reliability and tested their strength. The main hurdle in the way of adoption of IFRS for US is that the application and strength of IFRS is not tested for as long as the US GAAP. IFRS are relatively newly developed as compare to US GAAP. The decision to change the US GAAP into the IFRS cannot be taken in a snapshot the process will be time taking, as a huge change is needed to be brought. The EU adoption of the IFRS was very steady and easier as compare to the US. This is because the unification of 25 countries in a union with different economic, cultural and social background is a big task in itself hence the change of accounting standards is a relatively important but small part of it. Despite all the differences in the financial market environment the U. S see the implementation of the IFRS as an opportunity to implement and introduce the better standards to improve the creditors accessibility. The process of convergence has started of the U. S GAAP in the IFRS, which will come to success if mutual consensus will be developed. The cutting edge IFRS has that they have prepared by the most experienced and brilliant accounting professionals but has a negative point of not having a long history of implementation and strength testing. International Accounting Standards: In the January of the year 2006 the accounts of all the listed companies shifted to the International Financial Reporting Standards. Under the International Financial Reporting standards all the listed companies should present their fair information regarding the companyââ¬â¢s financial position, performance and cash flows. Despite the pressure from the International accounting agencies, some of the Governments are still reluctant to impose International accounting standards in their stock markets. Although there are big differences in the accounting standards in most of the economies of the world but the main aim of all the accounting systems is to ensure fair and transparent corporate governance and financial reporting. The adoption of the International standards will lead to decrease in the accounting scandals and increase the adoption of common standard all over the world. Conclusion: Degree of Information varies largely from institution to institution. The amount of information made available to the shareholders largely depends upon the volume of financial instruments and the type of financial instruments used by the company. It is estimated that the shareholders of a financial institution is more required to have the risk related information as compare to that of the shareholder of an industrial company. Financial risks are the important part of the financial business operations on the other hands it is generally a by-product of an industrial companyââ¬â¢s daily business. At the very minimum, a company should keep shareholders informed about the types of financial instruments used and their purposes. It must make a distinction between instruments that are used for hedging and those that are not, as well as the relevant accounting policies. It should disclose the notional principal of these instruments, their maturity, cash requirements, market value and credit risk. It should also tell shareholders how the firm monitors the values of these instruments. Where possible, firms should also disclose the firmââ¬â¢s market risks; if quantitative information is not possible then a qualitative discussion should be included. Why Censorship is bad Essay Example For Students
Why Censorship is bad Essay Censorship is berated and attacked verbally by proponents of freedom of expression. Yet these same individuals seek solutions to the problems needling society. A cause is always sought after and more often than not one of its causes, the freedom of expression, particularly in television, is not given enough consideration. Our free speech and our decisions to act and behave according to how we see fit is covered under the (#) Amendment(s). However, the First Amendment is not an excuse to allow networks and their shows writers to pass on just nything to the viewing public. Andrew Carnegie himself was a patron of the arts and thus said in his dedication address at the library of Pittsburgh: There is no class so pitiably wretched as that which possesses money and nothing elseMy aspirations take a higher flight. Mine be it to have contributed to the enlightenment and the joys of the mind, to the things of the spirit, to all that tends to bring into the lives of the toilers of Pittsburgh sweetness and light. I hold this the noblest possible use of wealth. Imagine the look on Mr. Carnegies face if he were to witness the noblest possible use of his wealth going towards not the high-minded art of producing noteworthy things, but to the production of such adulterated shows as Temptation Island or the tasteless jokes told on late-night television. An argument frequently made that it is the parents responsibility, and not a government to impose on the public what is good and bad to watch. The invention and introduction of the V-chip wrenches the control from parents and laces it into the television set, an already untrustworthy source of images prone to create more of a harmful dependence than enlightened independence. The V-ship, in its technological glory, is supposed to read a program and search for the very things the parent has dictated to be unsuitable, and then filter out those images. Unfortunately, the coding of ratings is voluntary, and though compliance is progressing or has progressed, it still remains to be seen whether information of the V-chip itself will be made readily available to the arenting owners of television sets. The July 5, 1999 deadline for half of all TV sets to be installed with the new technology has since been past and met. Most major companies (Philips, Sanyo, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Thomson and Zenith) have fully complied, with the hope that the remaining companies fall readily into compliance. Last but not least is the trumpeting cry for the children. When learning tasks, skills, and non(acceptable) behaviors, children take a monkey see, monkey do approach. Perhaps the reason why Sesame Street is so popular is because hildren are allowed to imitate the Count counting or repeat the sound of words being sounded out from the television screen. In the same way that television can aid in the learning of young children, it can also help foster within them aggression. : The average American child will have watched 100,000 acts of televised violence, including 8000 depictions of murder, by the time he or she finishes sixth grade (approximately 13 years old). These acts of violence that flash across the pupils of the young does harm from the fact that children follow examples.

Sugar Ray Robinson Essays - Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Robinson
Sugar Ray Robinson Pound for pound, the best. The claim has been used to describe many boxers, but it was invented for Sugar Ray Robinson. Never mind the weight class. When it came to boxing, Robinson was as good as it got. . Muhammad Ali called Sugar Ray the king, the master, my idol. Robinson could deliver a knockout blow going backward, boxing historian Bert Sugar said. Robinson held the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951, then was the middleweight champion five times between 1951 and 1960. At his peak, his record was 128-1-2 with 84 knockouts. And he never took a 10-count in his 200 fights, though he once suffered a TKO. His one early loss was to Jake LaMotta, his career-long rival. They fought six times, and Robinson won five. As recently as 1997, Robinson was renamed the best of all time -- pound for pound -- when The Ring magazine chose him the best boxer in its 75 years of publication. But Robinson's legacy was not made on boxing alone. He was one of the first African-American athletes to become a major star outside of sports. With his flashy pink Cadillac convertible and his Harlem nightclub, Sugar Ray was as much a part of the New York scene in the forties and fifties as the Copa and Sinatra. He was the pioneer of boxing's bigger-than-life entourages, including a secretary, barber, masseur, voice coach, a coterie of trainers, beautiful women, a dwarf mascot and lifelong manager George Gainford. After making an estimated $4 million in the ring, Robinson spent himself into destitution by the mid-sixties. Then he reinvented himself by getting into show business -- acting and even singing. But he would always be remembered for the music he made in the ring. He boxed as though he were playing the violin, sportswriter Barney Nagler observed. Robinson literally made his name boxing. Born Walker Smith Jr. in Ailey, Ga. on May 3, 1921 (some say it was earlier), he moved with his parents to New York. Boxing in a Harlem gym, he borrowed the Amateur Athletic Union boxing card of a friend named Ray Robinson. An early look at the future champ prompted Gainford to say he was sweet as sugar. So Walker Smith Jr. was no longer. In 1939, Sugar Ray Robinson was born. Shortly after winning the New York Golden Gloves, Robinson turned pro at age 19. Aside from a hitch in the Army, Robinson's World War II life was marked by the beginning of his rivalry with LaMotta. It started with his brutal, 10-round victory in New York. LaMotta, a middleweight, won their first rematch in Detroit, Robinson's first defeat in 41 pro fights. Then Robinson, a welterweight, avenged the loss three weeks later, also in Detroit. Robinson won two more decisions over LaMotta in 1945. I fought Sugar Ray so often, I almost got diabetes, LaMotta later said. Just before Christmas 1946, Robinson won the vacant welterweight championship with a unanimous 15-round decision over Tommy Bell. An eighth-round TKO of Jimmy Doyle in 1947 proved to be a tragic title defense for Robinson. Doyle suffered brain injuries that eventually cost him his life. When the coroner asked if he figured to get Doyle in trouble, Robinson said, Mister, it's my business to get him in trouble. Robinson continued to dominate his welterweight championship fights, including winning a unanimous decision over future champ Kid Gavilan on July 11, 1949. Then he moved up and won the vacant Pennsylvania middleweight title in 1950 with a unanimous decision over France's Robert Villemain. Still, there was that enduring memory of the only man who ever beat him. After more than five years, Robinson was reunited with LaMotta at Chicago Stadium on Feb. 14, 1951. Through seven rounds, the fight was competitive. Then the champ took command in the bloody St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The raging Robinson ripped into the raging bull and it was a weary LaMotta who came out for the 12th round, hanging onto the ropes, Robinson's trunks, anything he could find to avoid being knocked down for the first time in his career. Somehow, LaMotta answered the bell for the 13th, but a barrage of unanswered punches

Free-form questions can also make it easier for the questioner to catch your responses. If the answer choices are in order, this kind of essay question is most likely free-form. If not, there's a good chance the essay question will be structured so that you have to choose between several options. Students who choose the easy answer should take the least time. Students who choose the difficult answer take the longest. One word of caution: If you get stuck on a problem statement or answer choice, don't rush through it. G ive yourself enough time to consider your options. Ancient Greek Eroticism - An Introduction
Ancient Greek Eroticism - An Introduction Our knowledge about ancient Greek eroticism changes constantly, as more literary and artistic evidence is found and analyzed and as contemporary scholarship puts a new spin on old data. The Concept of Eros in Greece Ancient Greek society had different words for different kinds of love. Eros, for the most part, denoted love that had a sexual component. It could refer to the ideal marital affection between men and women, but also encompassed homosexual relationships. The concept of pederasty, which involved an older man who was both lover and mentor to a young man, also was connected to the idea of eros. This was not uncommon across all the varied Greek city-states. Sparta had homosexual relationships built into the structure of the training all young Spartan men received, although there is some disagreement among historians about whether the relationships were more paternalistic mentorships or primarily sexual. In other Dorian areas also homosexuality was widely accepted. Thebes saw in the 4th century the creation of a battalion of homosexual lovers- the Sacred Band. In Crete, there is evidence of ritualized abduction of younger men by older men. Contrary to popular belief, eros was not solely a sexual institution. In the case of pederastic eros, the relationships were considered educational above all else. Plato also theorized that eros could be directed towards mathematics and philosophy, rather than sexuality, in order to harness that driving energy towards improving ones mental and spiritual state. Sexuality, Myth, and History By the end of the 5th century BC, the concept of erotic and/or romantic homosexual love was enshrined in myth and art. Poets told stories in which male gods had relationships with young, beautiful human men, while myths also depicted similar relationships between human men or tweaked existing myths to fit this dichotomy of lover and beloved. One of the better-known myths of this sort is that of Achilles and Patroclus. According to the myths, Achilles, hero of the Trojan War, had an older and wiser companion named Patroclus. When Patroclus was killed in battle, Achilles completely broke down. The original Homeric texts did not specify a sexual relationship between the men, but later authors firmly interpreted their bond as romantic and sexual. The myth of Achilles and Patroclus was said to have inspired Alexander the Great in his relationship with his closest companion, Hephaestion. Again, however, the true nature of that relationship is unknown: whether they were lovers or had a non-sexual close companionship. In general, homosexual relationships between men were predominantly between an older and a younger partner. The idea of an adult male being the beloved of another man would have been frowned upon or outright stigmatized, since adult men were supposed to become dominant and not passive. Restrictions on Greek Women Women were considered the guardians of Athenian citizenship, but that didnt confer any rights. A citizen of Athens had to make sure all his wifes children were his. To keep her away from temptation, she was locked away in the womens quarters and accompanied by a male whenever she went outside. If she were caught with another man, the man could be killed or brought to court. When a woman married, she was a piece of property transferred from her father (or other male guardian) to her husband. In Sparta, the need for Spartan citizens was strong, so women were encouraged to bear children to a citizen who would sire well if her own husband proved inadequate. There she wasnt so much her spouses property as the states- as were her children and her husband. Because of this emphasis on the need for citizens, however, Spartan women had higher social standing, and the city-state honored the institution of marriage and the marital bond. Same-sex love between women was less recorded due to the role of women in society as a whole, but did exist. The most famous evidence of this is the poetry of Sappho, who wrote romantic poetry directed at women and girls. However, love between two women did not have the same usefulness as the educational/military bond of male-male relationships, and was therefore not supported socially. Plato and Current Theories of Greek Sexualities In Platos Symposium (a treatise on Athenian eroticism) the playwright Aristophanes offers a colorful explanation for why all these sexual options existed. In the beginning, there were three types of double-headed humans, he said, varying according to sex: male/male, female/female, and male/female. Zeus, angered at the humans, punished them by splitting them in half. From then on, each half has forever sought out his other half. Plato himself had a very wide range of views on homosexuality: early texts show him praising such relationships as preferable to heterosexual ones, but he also wrote later texts denouncing them. Scholars also continue to debate whether or not erotic love and sexual preferences were considered defining personality categories in ancient Greece. Current scholarship, including feminist and Foucauldian, applies a variety of theoretical models to the literary and artistic evidence we have about ancient sexuality. To some, sexuality is culturally defined, to others, there are universal constants. Application of Athenian literary evidence from the fifth and fourth centuries to preceding or succeeding generations is problematic, but not nearly so hard as trying to extend it to all of Greece. This placed limitations on the tonnage of various classes of vessels as well as installed a ceiling on each signatoryââ¬â¢s overall tonnage. This approach was extended and revised by the 1930 London Naval Treaty. As the global situation worsened in the 1930s, Japan and Italy decided to depart the treaty system. With the failure of the agreement, the US Navy elected to advance efforts to create a new, larger class of aircraft carrier and one which incorporated the lessons learned from theà Yorktown-class. The resulting vessel was wider and longer as well as included a deck-edge elevator system. This had been utilized earlier onà USSà Waspà (CV-7). In addition to carrying a more sizable air group, the new design included a more powerful anti-aircraft armament. Construction began on the lead ship,à USSà Essexà (CV-9), on April 28, 1941. With the attack on Pearl Harbor and US entry intoà World War II, theà Essex-class soon became the US Navys primary design for fleet carriers. The initial four vessels afterà Essexà followed the class original design. In early 1943, the US Navy made several alterations with goal of enhancing future vessels. The most noticeable of these changes was lengthening the bow to a clipper design which allowed for the mounting of two quadruple 40 mm mounts. Other changes saw the combat information center moved under the armored deck, improved ventilation and aviation fuel systems, a second catapult on the flight deck, and an additional fire control director. Called the long-hullà Essex-class orà Ticonderoga-class by some, the US Navy made no distinction between these and the earlierà Essex-class ships. USS Lake Champlain (CV-38) - Construction: The first carrier to commence construction with the improved Essex-class design was USSà Hancockà (CV-14) which was later re-named Ticonderoga.à This was followed by a multitude of ships including USS Lake Champlain (CV-39).à Named for Master Commandant Thomas MacDonoughs victory at Lake Champlain during the War of 1812, work began on March 15, 1943, at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.à Sliding down the ways on November 2, 1944, Mildred Austin, wife of Vermont Senator Warren Austin, served as sponsor.à Construction rapidly moved forward and Lake Champlainà entered commission on June 3, 1945, with Captain Logan C. Ramsey in command.à USS Lake Champlain (CV-38) - Early Service: Completing shakedown operations along the East Coast, the carrier was ready for active service shortly after the war ended.à As a result, Lake Champlains first assignment was to Operation Magic Carpet which saw it steaming across the Atlantic to return American servicemen from Europe.à In November 1945, the carrier set a trans-Atlantic speed record when it sailed from Cape Spartel, Morocco to Hampton Roads in 4 days, 8 hours, 51 minutes while maintaining a speed of 32.048 knots.à This record stood until 1952 when it was broken by the liner SS United States.à As the US Navy downsized in the years after the war, Lake Champlain was moved into reserve status on February 17, 1947.à USS Lake Champlain (CV-39) - Korean War: With the beginning of the Korean War in June 1950, the carrier was reactivated and moved Newport News Shipbuilding for an SCB-27C modernization.à This saw major modifications to the carriers island, removal of its twin 5 gun mounts, enhancements to internal and electronic systems, rearrangement of internal spaces, strengthening of the flight deck, as well as the installation of steam catapults.à Leaving the yard in September 1952, Lake Champlain, now designated an attack aircraft carrier (CVA-39), began a shakedown cruise in the Caribbean in November.à Returning the following month, it then departed for Korea on April 26, 1953.à Sailing via the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, it arrived at Yokosuka on June 9. à Made flagship of Task Force 77, Lake Champlain commenced launching strikes against North Korean and Chinese forces.à In addition, its aircraft escorted US Air Force B-50 Superfortress bombers on raids against the enemy.à Lake Champlain continued to mount attacks and supported ground forces ashore until the signing of the truce on July 27.à Remaining in Korean waters until October, it left when USS (CV-33) arrived to take its place.à Departing, Lake Champlain touched at Singapore, Sri Lanka, Egypt, France, and Portugal on its way back to Mayport, FL.à Arriving home, the carrier began a series of peacetime training operations with NATO forces in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. à USS Lake Champlain (CV-39) - Atlantic NASA:à à à à à As tensions in the Middle East spiked in April 1957, Lake Champlain raced to the eastern Mediterranean where it operated off Lebanon until the situation calmed.à Returning to Mayport in July, it was re-classified as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS-39) on August 1.à After briefly training on the East Coast, Lake Champlain departed for a deployment to the Mediterranean.à While there, it provided aid in October following devastating floods in Valencia, Spain.à Continuing to alternate between the East Coast and European waters, Lake Champlains home port shifted to Quonset Point, RI in September 1958.à The next year saw the carrier move through the Caribbean and conduct a midshipmen training cruise to Nova Scotia.à In May 1961, Lake Champlain sailed to serve as the primary recovery ship for the first manned spaceflight by an American.à Operating approximately 300 miles east of Cape Canaveral, the carriers helicopters successfully recovered astronaut Alan Shepard and his Mercury capsule, Freedom 7, on May 5.à Resuming routine training operations during the next year, Lake Champlain then joined in the naval quarantine of Cuba during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.à In November, the carrier left the Caribbean and returned to Rhode Island.à Overhauled in 1963, Lake Champlain provided aid to Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Flora in September.à The next year saw the ship continue peacetime duties as well as take part in exercises off Spain. Though the US Navy desired to have Lake Champlain further modernized in 1966, this request was blocked by Secretary of the Navy Robert McNamara who believed that the anti-submarine carrier concept was ineffective.à In August 1965, the carrier again aided NASA by recovering Gemini 5 which splashed down in the Atlantic.à As Lake Champlain was not to be further modernized, it steamed for Philadelphia a short time later to prepare for deactivation.à Placed in the Reserve Fleet, the carrier was decommissioned on May 2, 1966.à Remaining in reserve, Lake Champlain was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on December 1, 1969 and sold for scrap three years later.
